Research Specialist

This is a part-time research assistant position with the Grady Trauma Project for up to 2 years, at .60 FTE. The role is to serve as the project coordinator for a new study evaluating the benefits of caregiver adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) screening and provider-led conversation about ACEs in reducing child risk within a pediatric primary care clinic serving Latinx families from low-income communities. Hours will need to be during regular business hours but schedule is flexible.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Enrolling participants and conducting research visits at a pediatric primary care clinic in Chamblee, managing data collection and entry through RedCap, overseeing 2-3 research interns, engaging in weekly team meetings, and updating the research team regularly on recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Spanish language skills
  • Prior experience working in trauma or ACE-related research labs

This is a full-time research assistant position with the Grady Trauma Project and Emory Veterans Program for up to 2 years. The role is to serve as research specialist in the two clinical BioBanks. Hours will need to be during regular business hours but schedule is flexible.

Responsibilities: Under supervision, drives the organization and transfer of sample management systems.  Pulls samples from the BioBank on request and ships to collaborators.  Under supervision, performs DNA and RNA extractions from experimental samples according to prescribed protocols. Sets up genotyping, epigenetic or gene expression experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator. Participates in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, and inventory. Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases. Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations. Employee will be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. Performs other related responsibilities as required by principal investigator. 

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree; Prior experience working in a wet-lab, preferably with genetic assays.  Applicant must have strong computer skills.
